Visa, immigration, and customs information

Baku, the lively capital of Azerbaijan along the Caspian Sea, welcomes visitors with a straightforward entry process. Most travelers can enter via Heydar Aliyev International Airport or the land border with Georgia. Immigration is generally efficient, with e-gates for many nationalities and a separate counter for visa-on-arrival. Before you travel, confirm whether you need a visa, check that your passport is valid at least six months beyond your stay, and print or save electronic copies of accommodation confirmation and onward tickets. Knowing what to expect at immigration and customs helps you reach the city’s famous baku restaurants, baku beaches, and buzzing baku nightlife faster. Whether you’re drawn by old city baku, things to do in baku nightlife, or simply exploring baku food, arriving prepared ensures you start your trip smoothly. Immigration officers may ask about your plans, so having a rough itinerary—even if you’ll spend most evenings shopping in nizami street baku—keeps the process quick.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Azerbaijan operates a liberal visa regime: most visitors qualify for visa-free entry or a hassle-free e-Visa. Nationals of a handful of countries still require a traditional visa stamped in their passport before arrival.

Citizens of countries not covered by visa-free or e-Visa regimes must obtain a visa in advance.

Processing can take 7–10 working days; multi-entry business visas available with additional documents.

Arrival Process

Arriving at Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) is the most common route. The process is efficient, multilingual signage is abundant, and the airport is only 25 km from downtown baku hotels.

1
Flight Disembarkation
Follow signs to Passport Control. EU/UK/US passport holders can use e-gates if eligible; others proceed to staffed counters.
2

Present passport, e-Visa printout (if applicable), and arrival card. Officers may ask purpose of visit, address of where to stay in baku, and length of stay.
3
Baggage Claim & Customs
Collect luggage and proceed via Green (nothing to declare) or Red channel. Random checks occur.
4
Exit to Ground Transport
Currency exchange, SIM kiosks, and taxi counters are inside arrivals. Aero Express bus, Bolt, or airport taxi take 30–40 min to central Nizami Street or the Boulevard.
